The Game of Roullete
The game of Roullete is a gambling game in which players bet on the outcome of a spin of a roulette wheel. It is a very old game, the first written reference to it being found in a document published in 1758 describing gambling regulations for New France. It is believed that the game emerged in the early 18th century from elements of Roly Poly, Even Odd and Biribi which had evolved from earlier games with a similar wheel.
The roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk slightly convex in shape, with metal compartments, called a fret or canoe by croupiers, around the perimeter. Thirty-six of these compartments are painted alternately black and red, numbered consecutively from one to 36. There is an extra green compartment, labelled 00 on European wheels and two green ones on American wheels.
When a player wishes to place a bet they do so by placing chips on the betting mat, which is situated in front of the table. When the dealer sees that a bet has been placed they mark it by placing a marker on the mat to indicate its value, then they parcel out the chips to their players according to their betting odds. This is why it is important for players to read the rules and odds of each bet before making a choice.
In the game of roulette there are many different types of bets which can be made. These range from the simple bets such as red/black, odd/even and high/low to more complicated bets such as the progression of the numbers in a sequence (first, second or third dozen). In addition, some bets can be placed on groups of numbers such as first, second and third row, or columns; high or low; or if the number is red or black.
Despite its long history, there is no known system for beating the game of roulette as it is based on pure chance. The maths behind the game make it a very unforgiving game, although there are countless systems for playing it that claim to give the player an edge. A quick search on the internet will reveal many of these, some easy to understand and others not so.
